This week was all about GOALS! We made some SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Timely) about our website. For instance, we decided that we would have 4 book-related quizzes that would be coded in Python. Our site will be ready for testing on March 5th, at which point we will be checking everything for usability and functionality.
Kayla switched her project over to Python so that she can be ready to code some quizzes and a chat-box that lets users learn more about new books read. Charlotte is still taking a look at API's and Interactive Magazines and will hopefully incorporate one of these into the home page. Emily is chugging away at her Chatbot on Trinket so that she can make an interview page that will help us learn more about readers. And Ms. Kate is brushing up on her HTML/CSS skills from last year, because if you don't use those skills, ya lose 'em, folks. Especially when you get old. :-) We've also been having some holiday fun at BML GWC! Last week, we decorated holiday cookies and a gingerbread house. It was a delicious celebration of the holiday season! Happy Holidays and Happy New Year from the BML GWC chapter!

After a quick break to paint some pumpkins, BML GWC is back, and we are hard at work researching our selected topic for our Community Impact Project - Books! The girls learned this week about reputable internet searches and how to find good and reliable sources to use in their project research. We had girls researching top books for certain age groups, the importance of books in learning, and the history of books. Using this research, our girls thought about a target audience. And our girls decided on...
STUDENTS! We even had a suggestion to make a site that can be used and presented in schools. Our girls love field trips. :-) The girls then got to workin' on their tutorials. These included app development in Thunkable, coding a chat bot in Python, and more. We also learned about Haiyan Zhang, the head of innovation at Microsoft, who encouraged us to find like-minded people to work with, to play with new technologies, and to find problems in our communities that need solving. Girls Who Code is underway! Today, we learned about Grace Hopper and her amazing career as a computer coder for the US Navy. She showed resiliency and creativity in her work developing new coding languages.
This week, our coders started working on their tutorials. Charlotte is learning all about APIs (which we now know refer to Application Programming Interface!). Sophia is using Thunkable to create an app. Kayla is working to create some excellent quizzes in Scratch. Emily is refining her Python skills to create a chatbot that will respond to human users. Ms. Kate is going to work on the Interactive Magazine feature. Next week, we will post links and screenshots to show how these tutorials are progressing. We also decided on a theme for our CS Impact project! Our website will look at BOOKS!! As a librarian, Ms. Kate is pretty stoked about that. Tune in for more information about what this website will achieve! For our welcome week, everyone chose a trait they will be working on exemplifying and they selected a tutorial to pursue for the semester!
Ms. Kate is going to work on being BRAVE!!! To be brave, she is going to try the Python tutorial because she's never coded in Python before. Kayla is going to work on being RESILIENT!! She is going to work on the Quiz Game tutorial in Scratch. Charlotte is going to work on being BRAVE!! She is going to work on APIs in JavaScript - no one knows what that is, but Charlotte is going to master it and then teach it all to us. :-) Zoe is going to work on being PURPOSEFUL!! She will be learning more about the Chatbot tutorial. Emily is going to work on being even more CREATIVE than she already is! She will be working on the interactive magazine in Javascript tutorial. |
